Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than by adding some festive decor to your home? If you're looking for a fun and creative project, why not try making your own DIY shelf sitters? These adorable decorations are perfect for adding a touch of love to any room. In this blog post, I'll show you how to create your own DIY felt flower shelf sitters for Valentine's Day.

What are shelf sitters?

Shelf sitters are small decorative objects that are designed to sit on the edge of a shelf or table. They can be made from a variety of materials, such as wood, fabric, or clay. For Valentine's Day, we've got these kits ready to go for you with either a square or heart shaped background.

Additional Materials you'll need

Before you get started, gather the following materials along with your kit of supplies that can be found in our online shop here:

  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Sanding block or sand paper
  • Paint color(s) and/or desired stain

Step-by-step instructions

Follow these simple steps to create your own DIY shelf sitters:

Step 1: Prepare your wooden backgrounds

Start by painting or staining your unfinished backgrounds. Once dry, lightly sand to ensure they are smooth. .

Step 2: Paint your designs

Using your acrylic paint, create your desired designs on the wooden blocks. You can paint stripes with the included washi tape by taping off from the top, then adding a second line of tape as a spacer, and continuing (moving your spacer piece down as you go). Or, use the stencils included with your kit to create a heart patterned background or polka dots. If you are new to using our stencils, you can watch this tutorial on how to apply our vinyl stencils and paint.

Step 3: Form your felt flowers

Starting with the very center circular shaped portion of your felt flower, slowly start wrapping concentric circles around it with the scalloped edges by slightly layering the felt behind the previous layer as you make the circles. Keep forming circles until you get tot he end and use some hot glue to hold the end in place.

Step 4: Add the flowers, leaves and greenery

Once the paint is dry, use your hot glue gun to attach the foam flowers, leaves and greenery sprigs however you desire.  I find it easiest to lay the leaves down prior to gluing on the flowers. I usually add some glue to the ends of the greenery sprigs and tuck them in between the flowers as far as I can.

Step 5: Add any other desired embellishments

To give your shelf sitters even more embellishment, you can add the pompom(s) included in the kit as a flower center or any other embellishment you have on hand that coordinates.

Displaying your DIY shelf sitters

Now that your DIY shelf sitters are complete, it's time to display them! Place them on a shelf, mantel, or table where they can be seen and enjoyed. You can also give them as gifts to friends and family to spread the love.

Creating your own DIY shelf sitters for Valentine's Day is a fun and rewarding project. Not only will you have unique and personalized decorations, but you'll also have the satisfaction of knowing that you made them yourself. So gather your materials, get creative, and let your love for crafting shine this Valentine's Day!
